Burn Injuries From Construction Work
Construction workers face extraordinarily dangerous working conditions. Work in the field of construction, do exactly as you are told and you still might end up in an accident that renders you seriously injured. Burns are one of the more painful injuries you can endure while working construction. Unfortunately, construction sites are rife with all sorts of materials, equipment and other risks that can lead to a painful burn.
Thermal Burns
Thermal burns have the potential to end a construction worker’s life. Such burns typically occur on construction sites in which open flames are present. It is also possible for a welding accident to lead to a thermal burn. Thermal burns are the result of fire so they can cause third-degree burns that require skin grafting. In the worst case scenario, the thermal burn will end the victim’s life.
Electrical Burns
Construction workers often endure electrical burns simply because they deal with live electrical wires and must prepare electrical systems at houses and other buildings being constructed. Electricity has the potential to cause considerable damage to the organs as it moves through the body. This is precisely why electrical burns are one of the more common injuries suffered by those who work construction for a living.
Steam Burns and Scalding
Hot water and hot steam can also lead to nasty burn injuries. Though plumbers have an elevated risk for such burns, the little-known truth is every single person who handles pipe installation or works with hot liquid has the potential to suffer a significant burn.
Chemical Burns
Chemicals used with regularity have the potential to cause a nasty burn. Many chemicals are flammable. Certain chemicals will cause an especially harsh reaction upon touch or inhalation.
Sunburns
Construction workers are particularly vulnerable to sunburns as they spend the majority of their time working outdoors without adequate protection against the sun’s wrath. An especially harsh sunburn has the potential to cause sun poisoning as well as heatstroke in addition to severe burning.
Construction Worker Burn Risks
Construction workers can endure burn injuries in numerous ways aside from failing to adhere to safety protocols. As an example, it is possible for a co-worker to hit a gas main when digging and not paying close attention. In some cases, a worker strikes an improperly marked pipe and ends up with a nasty burn. Striking a gas pipe can spur an enormous explosion if enough gas moves out of the pipe. It is also possible for explosions to occur when a building or another part of the construction site is pressurized. Furthermore, if there is a scheduled implosion that is not performed in the proper manner, a massive explosion and subsequent burns can occur. In some cases, transformers are energized and have the potential to blow at any moment without forewarning. It is quite possible for live wires to fall from such transformers and cause electrocution. Live wires are a danger to construction workers as well as those who pass by the site in vehicles, on foot, etc.
